Herb
Mowry – October 25th Feature |
Last summer, Herb Mowry was ready to give
his guitar away. He started playing on
a $20 guitar at age 13 and even owned
a small music store at one time. But at
age 78, some of his fingers had lost feeling
and he had a hard time playing it. Then
he read an article about our Open Mic
in “The Hometown News.” The
story pictured 80-year old Montana Cy
playing guitar on our stage and told about
Montana’s passion for performing.
A bell went off for Herb right then and
there. “If he can do it, so can
I, ” he thought. Herb and his wife,
Diana, came to Rick’s the very next
week and Herb’s been on our stage
ever since, delighting us with his country/bluegrass
pickin’ and singing and his dry,
clever wit.
His solution to his disability? Sand paper!
He glues sand paper to his picks so he
can “hold on to ‘em. Number
36 grit is best.” he says. Herb’s
story is a living testament to the wellness
value of music for seniors.
“Music is a wonderful outlet for
any mood that I might be in. I can always
find a song to fit the mood or to elevate
my feelings. I treasure the friendships
I have made through music. Through the
Open Mic I have met so many great people,
and I’m honored to call them my
friends. There is so much respect given
and received. I am awed by the young people
like Matt and Sarah Borello and Mia (Boostrom)
and Andrea (LeClerc). They give so much
of themselves, yet, they do not snub or
disrespect us older folks. “
Rick says, “I get such a kick out
of watching the mutual affection and respect
that breeds between the generations at
our Open Mic. The common denominator is
their love for music. They’re eager
to share their music with each other.”
Says Herb, “If music was not a part
of my life, I’m not sure I’d
still be around. Rick and Robin, through
their hosting of the Open Mic, have pulled
me out of the woodwork and have given
me a fresh outlook on my plan and my role
in this life. I’m 79 years old now
and pray that the Lord will spare me for
some good years yet.” Rick &
Robin have a message for Herb.
“Stock up on that No. 36 grit, Herb,
there’s a lot more songs us youngin’s
need to hear.” On October 26, Herb
will celebrate his one-year anniversary
on the Rick’s Open Mic Stage.

Phyllis
Nelson-Zygiel – September
13th Feature
Piano & Vocals
Mothers know what a challenge it is
to find time for themselves. But Bridgewater’s
Phyllis Zygiel, can testify to the personal
fulfillment she gets from pursuing her
musical goal, which she explains is
“to express myself freely through
music.”
Almost every week she performs in front
of an appreciative Rick’s Open
Mic audience, where she says, “The
open mike at Rick’s has been invaluable
to me. It is a community of supportive
musicians and friends. A place to perform
and improve my performance. A place
that validates music and musicians.”
Phyllis knows how to make a song her
own, using phrasing and dynamic control
to create a meaningful interpretation.
There’s a quality of warmth and
richness to her voice, developed from
a lifetime of song. “Music has
been the driving force of my life, and
a constant companion. I have fond memories
of singing harmony with my mom and sisters
when we took trips in the car.”
“Music has been my motivation
for living a fuller, richer life. Now
that my children are becoming more interested
in music, I’ve been teaching them
how to sing harmony and teaching them
what I know about music. To me there
is nothing better than using my abilities
and encouraging others to use theirs.”
Rick says, “We couldn’t
have said it better!"

| Something
is buzzing in Raynham! It’s the sound
of pure enjoyment of live music, where people
of all ages who love to perform come to
Rick’s Music World and connect with
people who love to watch the magic happen.
Five years after it opened, Rick’s
Music on Rt 44 in Raynham has come to be
known as a true musical community connecting
over 500 families from Taunton, Raynham,
Assonet, Bridgewater, Lakeville, Berkley,
Middleboro, Dighton, Rehoboth, East Freetown
and beyond.
Word is
getting around that Rick’s is the
place to be on Thursday nights. “Every
Thursday night is Rick’s Open Mic
Night when we open our stage to the community
and watch what happens.” says owner
Rick Santos. “There’s never
2 nights the same, everyone enjoys the
spontaneity of it. We toss 40 or 50 performers,
writers and music lovers into our Café,
hit the ‘blend’ button and
enjoy the night’s dynamics. We’re
constantly impressed by the talent in
this area.”
Some of
that talent is home-grown, as Rick’s
Teaching Staff boasts some of the very
best music teachers this area has to offer.
Students aged from 3 to 83 and come every
week to learn guitar, piano, drums, bass,
flute, saxophone, bass, banjo, violin
and voice. But what really has Raynham
buzzing is all the special events, workshops
and performance opportunities that make
Rick’s stand out from traditional
music stores. Last month Rick decided
to close down his Swansea store and dedicate
all his energy to developing Raynham into
the music and arts center he always dreamed
of. His wife, Robin, who is co-owner of
Rick’s, an artist and also President
of The Rhode Island Watercolor Society
has some ideas of her own. “I have
plans to add another creative dimension
to our space by adding an art gallery
to our Music Education wing and inviting
area artists to show their work. Why not?
Rick’s is not just for musicians,
but for anyone who enjoys the arts.”
“The
Santos and Rick’s Music World have
been a blessing to the arts community.”
says Steve Toli who runs The Dessert Club,
a non-profit organization dedicated to
supporting the arts in the Taunton-Raynham
area. “They came to our rescue when
we needed a home and offered Rick’s
Café for our shows. Rick even donated
his time running sound.” Together
Toli and Santos have co-produced almost
100 live performance events since they
started collaboration in 2005, their biggest
one being the outrageously successful
January 21st concert of The Liverpool
Legends, a Beatles tribute band and have
promised to bring them back.
Toli is
now opening his own club in Taunton, Steve’s
Backstage Pass, where he will open his
stage to local, regional and national
talent. Santos and Toli have plans to
cross-promote and are committed to work
together whenever possible to keep the
arts alive.
The end
of March Rick’s Music will consolidate
its entire business into Raynham, including
their audio-video installation division
and rental department.

The Liverpool Legends dazzled the crowd
at the sold out show on Saturday, Jan.
21 at Taunton High School with their spectacular
musicianship and electrifying Beatle-true
harmonies. “They brought the sound
and personalities of the Beatles alive
right before our eyes & ears inspiring
the spellbound crowd to sing along and
dance in the aisles.
“People
are telling me that they felt like a kid
again.” says Rick Santos, President
of Rick’s Music World which co-sponsored
the event. “There were smiles everywhere
I looked, and people have been raving
about the show ever since.” he said.
Louise Harrison (George’s sister)
shared hugs, autographs and stories with
each and every fan that lined up to meet
her. The “Lads” also posed

RICK’S
MUSIC HOSTS PRIVATE “MEET &
GREET”

Click
here for photos of the Meet & Greet!
Friday
night, January 20th, Rick’s Music
in Raynham hosted The Dessert Club’s
“Private Meet & Greet”
with Louise Harrison and The Liverpool
Legends. It was a magical night for all
50 attendees, as they enjoyed a delicious
buffet and mingled with Louise, Band members
and each other. All were treated to Louise’s
stories of the early Beatle years.
“Louise
has an aura that surrounds her. She’s
such a profoundly amazing person,”
said Robin Santos (Rick’s wife and
VP of Rick’s Music). “She
told me that she feels it is her life’s
mission to continue to promote peace and
goodwill toward others, an attitude her
brother so creatively expressed within
the lyrics of his music and which was
fundamentally taught within the Harrison
household.” Louise read George’s
lyrics from “Within You and Without
You”. Thoughtful silence overtook
the room soon followed by warm appreciation
from the intimate group.
There
was hardly a dry eye in the place when
Jim Jonson (a songwriter & guitar
teacher at Rick’s) received a teary,
impromptu hug from Louise after singing
an original song he wrote in tribute to
her brother, George, shortly after his
death.
Steve
Toli, of The Dessert Club, thanked Rick
for hosting and co-sponsoring the weekend’s
events which were a dream come true for
both of them. Thanks were also given to
all the sponsors especially, Rick Mastria
of Mastria Buick, Mike Almeida of Future
Graphics, Chris Borrello of Winthrop Street
Motors, Ed Correira of Correira Insurance
and Whittenton Hardware. Steve then invited
people to come up on the Rick’s
stage and perform “any Beatles tune.”
Throughout the casual evening, musicians
took the stage and played their favorite
Beatle tunes and soon a Beatles jam was
underway.
Not
to be outdone, “The Liverpool Legends”
finished off the evening by performing
several songs with their fill-in drummer—Rick
Santos of Rick’s Music-- filling
in on drums for “Ringo” (Joe
Bologna) who was feeling under the weather.
“I’m not really a drummer,”
said Rick, but by the brilliance of his
smile he couldn’t have been happier
to join the Band onstage unless the Beatles
themselves had actually been there. And
in spirit, all agreed --they were!

created to promote the arts in the Taunton/Raynham
area. “It’s a perfect collaboration,”
says Rick, “Steve shares our commitment
to showcase local, regional and national
talent in a casual and enriching environment.”
The
Dessert Club “army” and Rick’s
Music staff volunteer our time whenever
possible to keep events affordable for
